Reflection of Junior Year Math
Intro:
Coming from sophomore year with ending the year not as well as I should have, then ending this year with 100% effort has really opened my eye to the amount of effort I put in. I learned that getting good grades doesn’t depend on how smart you are but how much time and effort you put into the work is what type of grade you receive. I have learned how important class time is and how valuable teachers can be in giving the students an advantage to step into the real world. Our learning environment is very open and has this automatic feeling of everyone having the same capability to learn something new, which I find important due to allowing myself to not have to be scared to ask a question or go up to the board and do a warm up problem, so the environment overall has allowed myself and other students to be more involved with the lessons.
Paragraph 1:
This semester I am most proud of keeping up with my weekly honors assignments, we had SAT packets due every other week and 99% of the time I turned it in on time full completed. I didn’t take honors first semester (which I regret) so coming into an honors class the following semester was a bit intimidating and I thought I would be drowning in the work but I was able to manage and complete everything. The goal that I am going back to “Provide reasoning for your answer, being able to show other ways of approaching the problem” First semester we did a lot more lessons then we did second semester so earlier in the year I was able to work more on this goal more then I was able. Examples of me working on this was pretty simple. On homework sheets and especially on tests I showed all my work which in the end helped me correct what mistakes I made. Specifically on the most recent Sin,Cos and Tan test I looked back at it and saw how much work I did, even though I was .5 from getting a 100, I still had the opportunity to catch what I did wrong. I have grown in work effort, really pushing myself and staying on top of grades. When I received a grade I wasn’t happy with I would do a makeup quiz, corrections or talk to the teacher which shows that I really do care about my education. The most significant concepts that I am taking away from this class is Trigonometry, Pythagorean Theorem, Golden Ratio and the most important to me is Standard Deviation. I know Standard Deviation will be useful when trying to find the average from point to point until the average of the data set. I think this is one that I am really taking away cause it wasn’t to hard just multiple steps in the procedure and I think I will be able to find it useful from day to day. Being a part of group discussion not only pushes yourself but if you take a step back and listen to your peers ideas it is quite interesting and there is so much to take away, so there are different forms of efforts putting into the classroom and I think that is where I grew largely is being able to find a way out to understand what’s being taught in a different way that not everyone does.
Paragraph 2:
I remember numerous times I believe it was first semester that I would go up and do warm up questions on the board for my table group. I loved doing it because it was a way to challenge myself but also a great way to wake up and start off school. But as well in smaller groups with our table I took leadership quite often trying to get the table to share their ideas along with mine. During the Sine City project I was a bit disappointed that I didn’t take the leadership role but instead became a follower within the group, by a follower I mean I would do what I was assigned instead of following my own ideas/plan. But the execution was great, everyone did equal work when it came to exhibiting it. Me and Brandon hot glued the laser cut pieces together while Ryan finalized the 3D model and DC arranged our binder. All of these were key components in why our product came out as great as it did! We got multiple comments more so by peers then the audience on how well our building was detailed. We originally had 5 buildings that we wanted to show but our Site Plan became lost so unfortunately the replacement site plan wasn’t able to hold all of our buildings so we worked with the space we had. Also I was in charge of all the elevation view sketches but didn’t get the chance to show the digitally so instead we used our 3D model to show the different views which was quite detailed and a great substitute and part of planning the space of the floor plan. As well as obviously completing my part as the surveying which held responsibilities that were important when creating the product.
Paragraph 3:
Something that I struggled with this semester was in this last project we did, was figuring out floor ratio then using that ratio while drawing sketches also figuring out how to do 2D elevation views was difficult but it started getting easier once I tested different angles when drawing. Getting through the year was easy with a supportive class. Such as table groups, having students solve together is extremely helpful knowing that students come from different directions in approaching the same problem. A habit I don’t feel like I grew on this year was “Take apart and put back together” I don’t think there was a time that I did this in an advantage situation. But I feel that I also didn’t try to backtrack as often as I should have. When I got lost I would go back and fix it but when I didn’t know how to fix it instead I asked someone else to do it instead of pushing myself to do it. My goal next year is to take honors and stay positive and on top of my work like I did this year. A hope I have is to finish off the class knowing I tried and pushed hard for my grades to be higher then a B+. To finish it off I am really going to miss you Mrs. GC, all honesty and I’m not lying, but I really did learn a lot this year especially 1st semester. The only thing I wish we did more of throughout the year was returning to learned subjects constantly so that we don’t forget any of it as well as more SAT prep but I really appreciated how much you cared about your students! Thank you for everything!
