In the beginning of my junior year I had a set plan that I wanted to study zoology as a major in college. But with an interest in Marine Biology as well. Having this experience has really opened my eyes to the different fields that are in animal conservation. I have learned that I really want to go into conservation and studied that in college I am unsure if that will be with them marine biology or with land animals that still to be decided. So having this experience has taught me the passion and excitement I have for conservation this will definitely affect my career knowing that I am very interested in learning more about conservation and possibly taking something similar to that in college. Getting to know the company was an extremely important part about this internship a big part of what I saw at SouthWest fisheries was through the mentor in which he treated me like a real intern, exposing me to all the different projects outside of the division of SFSC. Do this experience I gained a skilled I will take with me, learning how to code in R. Knowing that this could be a possible assignment in the future for college and or my career. It gave me a headstart knowing that I understand the basics of how to code. But looking at the broader, I will be taking with me a skill that I developed within myself and that is independence. There's a difference with being independent in High School vs in a company I had to know how to work by myself rather than working in high school but having that extra support from my teachers and peers that I'm comfortable with. Being able to step outside my comfort zone and going into a whole new atmosphere was an experience that I am very grateful for. Overall I absolutely loved my internship and I am quite sad that it has ended. But I give all credit and a humongous thank you to my incredible mentor who really taught me alot. He knew it was important that I step away from this experience with new developed skills and a mindset on the different fields within marine biology.
