Obama Inauguration
My classmates and I were assigned in a group consisting of 4 people total. We were then given the problem statement: How many people were at the Obama inauguration? We were given a blurred picture of the map of the inauguration. The map shows the distance from the monument and the white house. As you can see on this map in the image there are clumps of grey. Those represented groups of people at the inauguration, in which we had to estimate how many people total were there. So first in my group we circle with a marker every group. Then we looked up online how many square feet the first floor of the white house was. With those measurements we scaled the groups to the white house so for an example: We would take the width and length of a group ( the big blobs of grey) and we would compare it to the white houses inside width and length. With that we were able to tell if our estimate was near accurate. So after we found scaled it, we then divided the are by a persons' scale and the area for that was 1.5ft squared. It was important to have the are of a person because then we were able to scale that to the white houses inside. So lets say the groups area is 675,000ft we would then divide it by 1.5 to get the answer for the group. We did this routine for each and every group. We then added up all the number of the 10 groups and got the number 265,750 people at the Obama inauguration. A couple habits of a mathematician our group developed was Conjecture and Test & Collaborate and Listen. I think with the conjecture and test we were able to make estimates and if they didn't seem correct we would test some other theory out that was given by another member in the group. Collaborate & Listen, my group was extremely open with ideas that we could test out, everyone in this group was extremely helpful and useful. Some members would help others if they didn't understand certain parts and I think it was neat to see our fellow peers help each other. Below is the poster that my group created. As you can see we put our map on it and we also had each groups amount of people on the side. We also included our scales, process and total estimate.
