Serving San Diego 2015
DAY 1:
This was the first day of the intersession Serving San Diego. What we did on this day was went to elfin forest and hiked around there for a while and we learned about poison oak, and different plants/trees. We then came to an area where there were some trees that weren't supposed to be there so we started using hand saws to cut them down. After we cut the trees we put them into piles where they would be used as fences like the ones you see on trails. After we cut down a good amount of trees we took a lunch brake and then went back to cleaning up the extra branches and leaves that were left around the trees that were no longer there. A total of 3 community service hours.

DAY 2:
Today we drove up to the top of the San Elijo mountain and we were able to see the dam which was incredible because i didn't ever know that there was one around here that was so local and then we started cutting down more trees that weren't native american. The tour guys told us that they were going to replace them with oak trees. While we were cleaning up me and a couple people got sidetracked and started climbing a tree instead of helping out which was a big mistake. After we finished the trees up we then took about a mile maybe more of a hike just around the area of where we had been working. Then we took a break and went on one last walk which was just around the creek that flowed through. We saw an oak tree that was being infected by a mushroom type thing and sooner or later it would make the oak tree rot from the inside and eventually kill it. A total of 2 community service hours

DAY 3:
Today we visited the elementary kids and helped out the teachers with the kids. Me and my partner helped the teacher during fun time and we were playing with yarn and helping kids make crafts. We did this for about 2 hours and then we took a break and came back and half of the group went to Brookedale which is then senior home across the street from the school and then the other half stayed at school and made lunches for the Border Angles organization. I stayed to help with the lunches because since we just got back from the elementary I just wanted to relax and take a break.

DAY 4:
Today we went to downtown San Diego and went to the Border Angles Office and when we were there they kinda just gave us an overview of what their foundation does and then we drove over to the Home Depot and there we had lunches for the hispanic people that were next to the building looking for work. When we got there we gave them the lunches. We started talking to a few of the men and they told us a little bit of their story and what they were doing. |
DAY 5:
Today we went to moonlight beach and did a beach clean up for the day. We didn't spend that much time actually cleaning but we still got a good amount of work done for the 1 hour we were cleaning. It was interesting to see how much trash there was for just the one beach which wasn't even that big. People don't realize that when they throw trash on the ground it affects a lot more then they think. Because it goes into the ocean and from there on it can kill many different types of wildlife in the ocean.
